Kneifl Receives Counseling Excellence Award

LINCOLN, NE – The Nebraska State College System is pleased to recognize Ken Kneifl, School Counselor at Hartington-Newcastle Public Schools, with the 2024 Counseling Excellence Award. This annual award honors outstanding Nebraska counselors who show exceptional commitment to their students and communities.

Mr. Kneifl has dedicated over 30 years to school counseling, first working in elementary counseling before moving to high school at Hartington-Newcastle Public Schools. Starting his career in education as a teacher at Wynot, Beemer, and Holy Trinity Schools, he later earned his Master’s in School Counseling from Wayne State College, making a lasting impact on students' lives ever since. Reflecting on his years of service, Director of Admissions Amy Gade remarked, "Ken has gracefully adapted to every change, from evolving technology to addressing rising mental health challenges among youth, always placing his students first."

Chancellor Paul Turman underscored the vital role of high school counselors. “High school counselors like Mr. Kneifl play a central role in shaping students' futures, supporting them through their educational journeys, and preparing them for success beyond high school. We are deeply grateful for his dedication and are honored to recognize his contributions to Nebraska’s students,” Turman stated.

Colleagues and administrators who have worked closely with Mr. Kneifl commend his unwavering dedication. Superintendent AJ Johnson praised, "Ken’s dedication to our kids and their best interests is second to none. He truly cares about the well-being of our students and their futures." High School Principal Corey Uldrich added, “Ken is there every day, meeting students where they are and helping them thrive. His caring and calm approach has been invaluable to Hartington-Newcastle.”

Wayne State College Admissions Counselor Greg Scott, who has regularly collaborated with Mr. Kneifl, shared, "Ken is the epitome of a school counselor. His genuine care for his students and his respect for the college representatives visiting his school make a remarkable difference. He not only introduces us to students but actively engages in the process to best support his students’ futures."

Mr. Kneifl’s influence has reached beyond the high school years, with former students like Wayne State students Olivia Grutsch and Kennedy Gotch attributing their success to his guidance and support. Olivia recalls, “Mr. Kneifl’s encouragement gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams,” while Kennedy emphasized his unwavering support, saying, “He made me feel I wasn’t a bother, even when he was busy. He truly goes above and beyond for his students.”

The NSCS is proud to recognize Ken Kneifl for his tireless work, dedication, and compassion and for positively shaping students' lives.
